Today we’re open-sourcing Bloom, our digital Aristotelian learning companion.
What makes Bloom compelling is its ability to reason pedagogically about the learner. That is, it uses dialogue to posit the most educationally-optimal tutoring behavior. Eliciting this from the...
What’s the strongest case you know for alignment of a superintelligence being possible at all?
A parable about artificial intelligence

Since the rise of OpenAI, conscious artificial general intelligence, the (AGI) such as the ones brought to life in The Terminator and The Matrix have captivated the public. Nevertheless, this concept poses a paradox within computational theory.

There's a strange subpopulation of Ivy League undergraduate students. They're accomplished, driven, and capable. Yet they're deathly averse to genuine effort. In fact, they actively sabotage their own stated goals.
In college, as the years passed and...

The opening was well written and one that let me know this is a show for a cult and not "rationalism". Anyone that says religion is patently wrong with the same level of empirical evidence the religious have for it (i.e. none), I know I'm dealing with a cult leader who is anti-religion because they want a cult of personality instead. Read the post a second time - it's exactly that. Enough so this comment won't reach the minds of anyone or debate. I'll be blocked and screamed at because that's what a cadre of rational thinkers do when confronted - just like the ilk they dismiss without reason outright.

Let's be clear here. AI is not going to "end the world" in the sense that a global thermonuclear war or a Texas-sized asteroid might.
The potential concern is really that AI might end humanity. Sooner or later something will, whether that is indeed a global thermonuclear war, or a Texas-sized asteroid, or an alien invasion, or a species-killing virus (natural or manmade), or whether it is simply time and evolution.
But for AI to be the thing that ends us, one of two things must happen:
I am surprised this got so many upvotes on lesswrong. It seems both vague and containing dark patterns.
Starting with the title "Sentience matters". Who does sentience matter for? I think this more the hidden statement "Sentience should matter for you/everyone".
"Stating the obvious" - these things are not obvious to me. I am not even sure they are well defined.
It is also not clear to me what concrete policies are being desired here. And how one would recognize when they are being well applied. What the pro & cons of such policies? What would be th...
What is the relationship between identity and agency: swarming animals seem to operate both as collectives and singly. If there is something similar in higher animals, what might be the mechanistic processes or structures by organisms switch between collectivist and selfish actions.
Primitive forms of collectivist actions aren't left volatile by descriptive egoism as in higher organisms wherein the collective actions serve as a mere abstraction from the self-preservative motifs(which manifest irrationally on the surface as in being descriptively egois...
I definitely share the concern that AI = Skynet but am also optimistic that if people have frictionless means to use AI in a productive and safe way we have a shot to survive.
Hi! New guy here, fascinating place!
Also: Recently, it seems a remarkably large number of people are being tricked into not having children by panic over climate change, and being made to feel bad about the idea of having children. Please do not fall into this trap.
What's the trap here? Not seeing it.
The answer is simple,,lack of simple common sense.. look at previous answers,,,self explanatory ..who is reading this,,Really?A telemarketer is calling you right now.
